The European season is back and it was a fun weekend of football with some significant Canadian headlines mixed in.

Promise David joined Brighton, while rumours persist about other key Canadian players with potential moves ahead, with the deadline looming.

Plus, a stacked Canadian squad for the U-20 Women’s World Cup was announced and plenty more ahead in this week’s edition of The Northern Pitch.

When Promise David posted a still from LeBron James’ decision, it put Canadian fans on high alert that a move was close. A few hours later, he was on the pitch at Falmer Stadium in the blue and white striped kit of Brighton & Hove Albion.

It’s a massive move for the Brampton-born bagsman, who joins a club without an outstanding reputation for their talent evaluation and development within the footballing world.

The 25-year-old joined the club on a season-long loan, with an obligation to buy for a reported £22 million should he hit certain targets. It’s another incredible step on his remarkable soccer journey, which has taken him from Canada to Croatia, the United States, Malta, Estonia, Belgium and now the highest level at the English Premier League.

David’s latest stop with Union Saint-Gilloise was historic, as he led the club to their first title in 90 years. In 82 matches in all competitions for the Belgian side, David scored 41 goals and nine assists.

Brighton’s owner Tony Bloom also has a minority share in Union Saint-Gilloise, so David is a player who will be well-known within the system. His highlights have already been going viral in the Brighton area as they discover just how special of a talent they have signed.

David was on the bench for Brighton as the Premier League season kicked off this weekend, but did not feature in their massive 4-0 win over Aston Villa. They host Norwegian side Trømso in the UEFA Conference League action on Thursday, currently tied 0-0 on aggregate.

Villarreal loves our Canucks. The Yellow Submarines are interested in acquiring the CanMNT midfielder from his current club Anderlecht. If it happens, Saliba would join fellow CanMNT teammates Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi. However, the Belgian club is standing firm on Saliba’s price tag.

€20 million. RSC Anderlecht are open to the transfer if only Villarreal are willing to match the asking price. The initial offer was €6 million, but Villarreal have now counter-offered €15 million or more.

Saliba is forcing the move. Villarreal wants him, and Saliba wants it, but for Anderlecht, it is about the price tag. It has been reported that Nathan had been omitted from the match sheet in Anderlecht’s recent game due to disciplinary issues involving a phone.

It may seem like a small gesture, but the timing of it suggests that Saliba is expressing his desire to move. It seems like he’s pressuring the club for the move by dissenting.

Whatever happens, CF Montréal could be getting money. Part of the transfer deal included a supposed 10% sell-on clause if Saliba were sold by Anderlecht. The exact sell-on percentage is unclear, but MTL would be happy with the passive income.

Canada U-20 World Cup squad feels like the best Canadian youth national team in a while, stacked with notable names like Annabelle Chukwu, Kaylee Hunter, Jeneva Hernandez Gray, Olivia Chisholm, Noelle Henning and Janet Okeke.

Canada have an incredibly difficult group for the competition, headlined by England, who they face in their first match on the tournament’s opening day, September 5. They also take on Brazil and tournament debutant Tanzania.

The top two teams from each group advance directly to the knockout stage, as well as the four best third-place teams from the tournament’s six groups.

Canada reached the round of 16 two years ago during a strong showing before exiting against Spain in a close matchup.

They will look to do even better this tournament, with a few of these players hoping strong performances will hand them a spot on Casey Stoney’s squad for the Concacaf W Championship this fall.

⭐ Julia Grosso is golden again. It wasn’t quite the heights of stepping on the top step at the Olympics with Canada, sure, but after the season Chicago’s had, you’d be forgiven for feeling that way as a Stars fan. Grosso scored a late winner against Louisville.

🇩🇪 Alphonso Davies and Bayern win the Supercup. Some early season silverware was on tap for the record German champions. Bayern’s 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund also secured Phonzie his 17th trophy in Munich.

😇 Three on the season for Cyle Larin. Yes, already. Three games into the season and Southampton’s #9 still has as many goals as games played after a tidy finish between the wickets of Stoke City’s keeper in a 3-1 win.

🥒 Tajon Buchanan tripped in the box. A page from the Richie Laryea school of goal involvements, perhaps? Buchanan came off the bench for Villarreal in a 2-2 draw at Atlético Madrid, and almost instantly won a PK — which was converted.

👑 Cloé Lacasse with another assist. When things are going well, they just kinda fall for you. Okay, maybe not, unless you’re the Utah Royals. Lacasse’s blistering season continued in a 4-2 loss to San Diego as she set up Mina Tanaka’s brace.

🌹 Jessie Fleming helping out. A picture-perfect assist makes a well-struck goal. That cliche bore out for the Thorns as JFlem assisted Sophia Wilson with an incisive cross-field pass in a 1-0 win over the Denver Summit.

🇮🇹 Dylan Judelson to Genoa? More Canadians are being linked to Serie A than ever. Following in the footsteps of Derek Cornelius, Orlando City B and CanM20 midfielder Judelson is set to join Genoa on loan.

🇫🇷 Sigur to Toulouse? Canadian deals aren’t safe from usurped at the last minute, not at all. Croatian rumours suggest Celtic’s interest in potential AJ understudy Niko Sigur isn’t unique with Jacen Russell-Rowe’s Toulouse also submitting an offer.

🇨🇲 Easther Mayi Kith is a WAFCON champion. Shoutouts are due out to Québec City’s own as she lifted the WAFCON title with Cameroon this week! Mayi Kith was a Canadian youth int’l before switching to the Indomitable Lionesses (a killer nickname, by the way), playing a major part in a 3-0 win over Malawi in the Final.

Ⓜ️ CF Montréal finally get a dub. This was a game of ups and downs for MTL. The game started strong with a turnover from the Columbus Crew and Prince Owusu scoring his 12th goal of the season. Soon after, a shocking own goal from Thomas Gillier that failed to connect with a back pass from Jalen Neal equalized the game. Noah Streit would later win the game for CFM with an absolute screamer from outside the box. This was Alexis Sanchez’s first game with MTL, and they won 1-2 at Columbus.

🔴 Toronto FC are showing signs of improvement. Despite drawing 3-3 at BMO Field against Charlotte FC and Walker Zimmerman being shown a red card, there are positives to take away. By the 58th minute, TFC were down 3-1 with 10 men. With those odds, the boys in red showed determination and came back with two goals from Daniel Salloi in the 76th minute and from Niklas Dorsch in the 90th.

🌊 Houston are now top dogs in the West. The Vancouver Whitecaps hosted the Houston Dynamo in a matchup that would determine the top seed in the West. This was a tight game as both teams were at even odds until Houston’s Franco Negri scored a stunner in the 34th minute. Vancouver lost 0-1, making Houston the new top seed in the conference.

😎 Alexis Sanchez’s first game at Stade Saputo. A sold-out crowd at Stade Saputo is always a vibe, and out of five home games, MTL has four draws and one loss. The latest 2-2 draw against LA Galaxy was the fourth. MTL are showing signs of improvement, but they seem to lack a killer instinct. On the bright side, Sanchez might be that answer. Upon coming onto the pitch, the team’s performance has improved. It is clear that Alexis will raise the standard in the club.

🔴 Did Toronto really win away at home? Not just any away win, a 1-2 dub against Miami. Josh Sargent and Derrick Etienne Jr. would find the net to secure TFC’s win. A moment of panic as Messi would score in the 82nd minute, but despite Miami's attacking onslaught, Toronto’s defensive shape held strong, and they found their way back to the 6ix with three points.

😳 Is Vancouver mad at Jonathan Sirois? This was a total beatdown. The Whitecaps hosted Dallas FC, and it was a one-sided affair. The Caps defeated the away team 5-0. Sirois was enjoying decent form in the last few games, but this time, it looked like the entire Dallas team collapsed. They had no answer for Vancouver’s attack and barely broke through their defence.

👏 The Vancouver Whitecaps aren’t leaving? In a viral tweet and through the AFTN podcast, it was reported that the Whitecaps have signed a five-year deal with the BC government to take over day-to-day operations of BC Place. The Whitecaps have denied the reports. But there’s something in the air that may suggest that there are improvements in the ongoing talks between the club and the province.

🦆 Marcus Caldeira scores his first. The former SuperDraft pick has been taking his first steps for the first team in recent week, and on Saturday, scored his first goal in MLS in a 5-1 demolishing of San Jose.

💙 Stephen Afrifa scores for SKC. Talk about the perfect shot. Canadian baller Stephen Afrifa could be next man up for SKC after a $6 million approach from Seattle for starting striker Dejan Joveljic. Fans saw glimpses of a future that might be alright, despite a 2-1 loss to Atlanta.

🔨 Aghilas Sadek bailed out Forge with a worldie. This was a close one for Forge as they hosted Supra in a five-goal thriller that went back and forth. However, with Forge’s experience and playing at home, the edge was in their favour. Aghilas Sadek came on after half-time and scored a beauty of a curler in the 77th minute to seal a 3-2 win for Forge. Unfortunately, Sadek was subbed off in the 90th due to injury.

🦖 Atlético Ottawa hosted Vancouver FC and handed the away team a 4-0 loss. Jean-Aniel Assi went viral with his coast-to-coast goal and doubled his tally with a banger in the 59th minute. Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau is establishing himself as Ottawa’s main guy. So far, he has three goals and two assists in five games.

⚓️ The Halifax Wanderers finally get a dub. The Wanderers have finally won three points after five winless games with a 1-0 win over Vancouver FC at home. VFC supporters, do not be disheartened. Midweek’s match against Atlético Ottawa was abysmal, but this defeat had positives. The Eagles kept fighting, but the Wanderers had a solid game plan.

🐴 Cavalry stay on top. In-form Atlético Ottawa travelled to ATCO Field to face top-seed Cavalry FC. With both teams enjoying impressive winning momentum, this game promised goals, and it did. Unfortunately for Ottawa, it was them at the losing end of a 3-1 game. Tobias Warschewski scored a brace, and Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau is that guy. The dude scored a banger and is emerging as not only Ottawa’s go-to goal scorer but the league’s most dangerous striker.

🔨 Forge are back on top of the table. Pacific FC travelled to Hamilton and returned to Victoria with a 2-0 defeat. Forge have found their groove with quality goals from Ismael Oketokoun and another beauty of a curler from Aghilas Sadek. As for Pacific, their abysmal season continues as they remain winless in this 2026 campaign.

☄️ Loïc Kwemi is now the league’s top goal scorer. FC Supra du Québec played against Inter Toronto at York Lions Stadium. The Nine-Stripes took the lead in the 14th minute with a goal from Julian Altobelli. Loïc Kwemi would equalize in the 60th minute bringing his league tally to 9 goals. Supra’s Diyaeddine Abzi would be shown a red car after receving a second yellow after challenging Inter’s keeper Ivan Pavela in the box. The game ended 1-1.

🏔️ Vancouver thrashed Ottawa at home. The Rapid have only one point in three games, and their 1-5 defeat at TD Place Stadium is their second home loss this season. The Vancouver Rise’s attack exposed Ottawa’s defensive weaknesses. The Rapid’s biggest defensive mistake in this game was marking, or the lack thereof. Vancouver’s goals came from intentional and well-timed runs with clinical finishing. Ottawa were not quick enough to answer. Lessons have been learned.

🌇 Toronto stand tall in the tide. AFC travelled to Wanderers Ground and defeated the Tides 0-2. In the iconic Maritime rain, the weather became a factor. The first goal seemed to have slid off Tides’ keeper Anika Toth. AFC later earned a penalty, which Kaylee Hunter converted. With this win, Toronto are solidifying their playoff spot.

🦉 Calgary continue their undefeated run. The Wild were hosted by the Montréal Roses and continue their good form in Québec. Granted, the Calgarians did not get the dub however return to Alberta with a 2-2 draw. Calgary scored first with a penalty scored by Teagan Stewart. MTL would respond with a brief come back with goals from Mimi Alidou and Elyse Bennet. The Wild would have the last say a Jorian Baucom would end the game with an equalizer.

🪽 Ottawa extend DB Pridham. This one could only be described as a no-brainer. The Rapid’s talismanic striker is staying in the nation’s capital and will continue to terrorize NSL defenses until 2028, at least. Ottawa also added local defenders and U SPORTS standouts Hannah Chown and Elise Bell to their roster.
